You will be surprised to find that
Modern Turkish is spoken by over 60 million people in Turkey, Northern
Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania & other parts of the Balkans as well as a few
million members of Turkish communities in Australia, Belgium, Britain,
Germany & Holland & other western countries. Unfortunately, it is totally
unrelated to the languages most British travelers will have come across such
as French, German, Spanish or Italian & can appear a little daunting to
first time visitors. You will find that a lot of Turkish people in & around
Marmaris speak at least some English, yet you will find that if you attempt
a few words in Turkish, it will be highly appreciated & will go a long way
in fostering good relationships with the local people. Turkish lessons are
readily available for those determined to learn more and usually cost the
equivalent of 10 pounds and there are some excellent 'teach yourself
Turkish' books & cassettes available in Britain & in Turkey.
If you wish to learn Turkish, there is
some good news & some bad news:
The bad news:
-
Turkish uses 'vowel harmony' - a feature unknown to English speakers
-
Where
English uses a separate word, Turkish often adds an ending to an
existing word
-
The
word order often appears odd
-
Turkish vocabulary is mostly unrelated to western languages - though
many words have been taken from French reflecting the close
relationship between the two countries during Ottoman times
The good news:
-
Nouns do
not have different genders (as in French or German for example)
-
Turkish
grammar is very regular - learn a rule, and there are usually no
exceptions
-
Once you
know a little vocabulary and a few rules about vocabulary building,
then guessing at the meanings of new words is a piece of cake.
A few useful words to start you off:
|
Merhaba (MER - ha
- ba)
|
Hello
|
|
Lutfen (Loot - fen)
|
Please
|
|
Tesekkur ederim (TESH
- ek - KUR ED - er - im)
|
Thank you
|
|
Hosca Kal (HOSH - ja
KAL)
|
Goodbye |
|
Ne kadar? (nay KA - dar?)
|
How much? |
|
